The Hidden Consequences of Fossil Fuels

Historically, the primary source of the world's energy has come from fossil fuels. However, as we have mentioned in our previous posts, we are shifting toward a more sustainable future. Not only are new developments capable of providing a more stable future globally, but they are also environmentally friendly. Although most people attribute fossil fuels to resource depletion and pollution, it is important to examine just how adversely these energy sources affect our planet. In order to do your part in contributing to green energy creation, experts recommend implementing an LA Used Cooking Oil Disposal service regularly.

According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, 85 percent of energy used is stemmed from fossil fuels which includes natural gas, coal, and oil. Although there are obvious costs associated with this process such as labor and materials, it is important to acknowledge the latent consequences, as well. Let's now take a closer look at the scope of problems that using fossil fuels creates.

Global Warming- Carbon dioxide gas that is released by burning fossil fuels traps heat in the earth's atmosphere. As a direct result, our atmosphere has increased its carbon dioxide presence by 25 percent over the last 150 years. What's more, earth's average surface temperature has jumped an estimated 0.5-1.1 degrees since the 1800s. If the temperature continues to rise, we are at risk for global affects such as melting of glaciers and sea level rising, modified weather patterns that could result in more natural disasters, and even more droughts.

Air Pollution- Carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, sulfur oxides, and other pollutants are emitted into the air upon burning fossil fuels. These gases cause smog and health issues for people such as respiratory problems and even proven to worsen heart disease symptoms.

Water & Land Pollution- Oil spills and coal residue pollute waterways and damage the surrounding ecosystems. Coal mining permanently damages the used land unless proper precautions are taken to clean the area of toxins and waste products.

Thermal Pollution- Generating electricity causes heat to be dispersed into the surrounding land in the form of coolant or the air. Although this may seem harmless, the runoff from this process pollutes rivers and lakes, adversely affecting the aquatic life.

At Optimal Biofuels, we understand the consequences of burning fossil fuels, which is why we are devoted to a more environmentally friendly process.
